Amargosa Opera House & Hotel in Death Valley
The Amargosa, whose name stems from the Spanish word for “bitter” (amargo), is located in a town called Death Valley Junction. population: less than 20, restaurants: 0, gas stations: 0, opera house: 1.The hotel is operating, and the shows continue at the opera house: Resident Marta Becket staged dance and mime shows there since the late 1960s up until her death in February, 2017. Once the recreation hall in the Mexican Colonial style “company town” built between 1923 and 1925 by the Pacific Coast Borax Company, the Amargosa Opera House features murals painted by Marta Becket. Several of the guest rooms have murals painted on the walls where cherubs and peacocks and angels frolic. In room 22, a ballerina dances on a ball, and clowns and acrobats perform as a special dedication to red skelton, who was a guest in this room on four occasions.
